How to Transcribe an Instagram Reel to Text

Copy the link of a public Reel, paste it into Instagram Reel to Text and press Get transcript. The speech comes back as text with timestamps that you can edit, copy or download as a TXT file. No account and no app to install. Below are the steps, plus fixes for the problems people run into most.

What you need

  • A public Instagram Reel (or video post) up to 60 minutes long.
  • The link to that Reel.
  • A phone or computer with a current browser.

Step 1: Copy the Reel link

In the Instagram app

Open the Reel, tap the Share (paper-plane) icon and choose Copy link. The link looks like instagram.com/reel/….

On a computer

Open the Reel on instagram.com and copy the address from the browser's address bar.

Step 2: Paste the link

Go to Instagram Reel to Text, paste the link into the box and pick the spoken language, or leave it on auto-detect. For short Reels it's worth choosing the language yourself. Confirm that the Reel is public and that you have the right to transcribe it.

Step 3: Get the transcript

Press Get transcript. The server fetches only the audio, converts it to text and deletes it. A typical Reel takes well under a minute. The result appears in an editor with one line per sentence and the time each one starts.

Step 4: Edit and save

Skim the transcript and fix names, hashtags, brand names and anything said over trending audio. Then copy the text or download it as a TXT file, with or without timestamps. If you make your own Reels, the transcript is a quick starting point for captions, a carousel or a blog post.

When a Reel can't be transcribed

The account is private

Only public content can be read. Private accounts, Stories and anything behind a login won't work.

Instagram blocks the request

Instagram sometimes refuses automated requests, even for public Reels. Wait a few minutes and try again. If it's your own Reel, save it from Instagram and upload the file to Video to Text, which works entirely in your browser.

The Reel is mostly music

Songs and sound effects aren't transcribed reliably. If a Reel has only a few spoken words over music, expect a short or partly wrong result.

The text is in the wrong language

Select the spoken language instead of auto-detect and run it again.

Reel transcript vs. Instagram's captions

Instagram can show auto-generated captions on a Reel, but you can't copy that text out of the video. A transcript gives you real text you can search, translate and reuse, and it works whether or not the Reel has captions turned on.

Use transcripts responsibly

Only transcribe Reels you made or have permission to use, and follow Instagram's terms and the creator's rights if you republish text. For timed caption files, use the Subtitle Generator. Working with TikTok? See how to get the transcript of a TikTok video.
