What gets removed

A subtitle file mixes the spoken words with information meant for video players. This tool strips:

  • Caption sequence numbers (1, 2, 3…)
  • Timing lines such as 00:01:04,200 --> 00:01:06,900
  • Formatting tags like <i>, <b>, <font> and positioning codes such as {\an8}
  • WebVTT headers, NOTE comments, STYLE blocks and cue settings

Output options explained

Merge into paragraphs

Captions are short by design, so a raw conversion produces hundreds of choppy lines. Merging joins them into flowing paragraphs, starting a new paragraph after long pauses in the dialogue.

Keep timestamps

Adds the start time of each caption as [00:01:04]. Handy when you need to cite where a quote appears in a video.

Remove repeated lines

Auto-generated captions, including those downloaded from some video platforms, often repeat the previous line as new words scroll in. This option removes those duplicates so each sentence appears once.

Don't have a subtitle file?

If you only have the video or audio, use Video to Text or Audio to Text to transcribe it directly, or create a subtitle file with the Subtitle Generator.

Frequently asked questions

Is my subtitle file uploaded anywhere?

No. The conversion happens in your browser. The file is read on your device, and the text never leaves it unless you copy or download it yourself.

Does it work with VTT files too?

Yes. Both SubRip (.srt) and WebVTT (.vtt) files are supported, including VTT files with styling and notes.

Why do some characters look wrong?

Older subtitle files are sometimes saved in a legacy encoding instead of UTF-8. Open the file in a text editor, save it as UTF-8, and convert it again.

Is there a file size limit?

Files up to 10 MB are supported, which is far larger than a typical feature-length subtitle file (usually under 200 KB).

Can I convert TXT back to SRT?

Plain text has no timing information, so it can't be turned back into subtitles on its own. Use the Subtitle Generator with the original video to create a timed SRT file.
