Which bitrate should I choose?
Bitrate controls how much data is used per second of audio. Higher bitrates sound closer to the original but make bigger files. As a rough guide, one minute of audio is about 1 MB at 128 kbps, 1.4 MB at 192 kbps and 2.4 MB at 320 kbps.
- 128 kbps — speech, lectures and audiobooks. Small files that are easy to share.
- 192 kbps — a good default for mixed content, including music, with little audible loss.
- 320 kbps — the highest MP3 quality, best for music you'll listen to on good headphones.
Converting can't add quality that isn't in the source. If the video's audio was recorded at a low bitrate, a 320 kbps MP3 will be larger but won't sound better than 192 kbps.
Common uses
- Listening to a recorded lecture, sermon or webinar on the go
- Turning a video interview into an audio podcast episode
- Pulling a voice-over or sound effect from your own footage for editing
- Preparing a smaller file for audio transcription
